Apple secrecy results in death of Chinese iPhone engineer

Steve Jobs' insistence on a culture of pervasive secrecy at Apple has now claimed a life.

As the investigation begins into what caused 25 year-old Foxconn employee Sun Danyong, a recent and promising graduate of the Harbin University of Engineering in northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province, to jump to his death, eyes are increasingly turning not only to Foxconn for answers, but to Apple itself.

"On Thursday, July 9th, Sun got 16 prototype phones from the assembly line at a local Foxconn factory. At some point in the next few days, he discovered that one of the phones was missing. He suspected that it had been left at the factory, but couldn't find it. On Monday, July 13, he reported the missing phone to his boss. Then, that Wednesday, three Foxconn employees searched his apartment — illegally, according to Chinese law. Accusations are flying that Sun was detained and physically abused during the investigation"

"What is known: On Thursday — a little after 3 a.m. according to surveillance videos in the apartment building — he jumped out of a window in his apartment building to his death."

An Apple spokesperson confirmed the death of the employee, saying that "we (Apple) require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect." Apple did not elaborate on the specifics of their so-called "requirements", nor did they comment on any aspect of Foxconn's involvement in the matter. Foxconn is not commenting on any aspect of the situation, other than to say that the security division concerned has been suspended without pay.

Meanwhile, back in the United States, Apple fanboys are far more concerned about the lost iPhone prototype than the lost life.

They're Chinese workers so how much of high Apple profits end up going to them and not Apple anyway? As one who has worked in China before, I'd guess they make about $AU200 a month, and that's being very, very lenient.

Hmm, I'd like to see what China does. China doesn't like bad press, and always wants to send out an air of superiority and assert it's identity.
Remember the lip-synching Olympics incident?
Remember the obviously underage gymnasts at the Olympics?
There are lots more, and China is fucking nuts about maintaining an image.

You sure are grasping at straws with this story. Aren't you tired of printing lies and half truths? That's probably why you're a Winblows fanboi!

Why would I have to defend against anything. I didn't push him. There is NO evidence that Apple pushed him. He jumped. Not exactly a rational response. He obviously had some mental issue to think that was an acceptable reaction. You might as well blame his engineering school because they must have given him an education that told him to jump if he ever screwed up at work.

Win-tards are grasping at straws on this one.

the pressure apple puts on those chinks for secrecy caused him to jump. this is all apple's fault and they deserve to be shut down.

Sorry, but your half-ass attempt to blame Apple is lame to say the least. Win-tards have no substance on their side so they resort to lies to scare people away from quality products like Apple makes.

Then again, if I overpaid for what amounts to a cheaply built, overpriced PC with a gimped Unix OS, I'd be massively butthurt too.
