Investigation into exploding iPods hindered by Apple
Added 2009-07-22, 03:32 PM | 45 Replies
Most technically-oriented people know that any powered device from Apple could burst into flames at any moment, but investigative reporter Amy Clancy of Seattle's KIRO-TV news wanted to bring this reality to the public. She wanted proof.
So she did what any good reporter would, using the Freedom of Information Act to request any and all documents from the Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding problems with Apple's portable devices. What she found in the 800+ pages she received was shocking. And smoking. And exploding and burning. A large volume of complaints for a problem which Apple continually insists has never happened even once.
A month after KIRO-TV started its investigation, an exploding iPod touch severely injured the leg of a child in Cincinnati. If only Mrs. Clancy could've finished her report earlier, this could have been avoided.
But wait, she could have.
Ever since her investigation began in November 2008, Apple's lawyers had been filing exemption after exemption to block CPSC from releasing the documents she requested under FOIA.
The end result? A stall of over 7 months between the FOIA request and delivery of the documents for the report. It was during this stall that the previously mentioned iPod touch exploded in the Cincinnati child's pocket. Apple Legal's tactics have possibly scarred a young man for life, with countless others injured or possibly killed in the interim.
The CPSC has initiated full-scale recalls for far less than this. Why is Apple receiving special treatment? Where is the accountability? And how many more permanent scars and deaths will have to occur before the CPSC cracks down on Apple?
iProduct owners: You sure got told. Over seven months too late. (video)
Have news of Apple getting told? Found a Mac user making an arrogant comment on a forum somewhere? Send it in!

and it is 15 iPods out of 218,000,000 sold. That is 0.0000068807%. This is a non-issue. So why is it being whipped by this reporter. Well, let's see, she is from Washington state, you know, the state that MS calls home. So it's a bonus for her. By falsely making a huge issue out of something that is statistically insignificant she gets huge page hits in what is otherwise a dead end career for her. A big win for her, a complete non-issue in reality. |
